About the platform

The #first-genphilosophers platform is all about philosophers whose parents did not go to university.

It should serve as a platform for all the different experiences, opinions and ideas of first-gen philosophers. Our hope is that philosophy will benefit from various perspectives, and so will the debate about educational justice.

Who are we?

We are two first-gen philosophers ourselves, Simona Aimar and Daniel James:

We are blessed to have two student assistants for this project — Joshua Goh and Christabel Cane.

We are also thankful to Lola Le (for the logo and designing the website), Luke Dawson (for the website structure), and Kirill Semkow (for the picture above and the one in the submission page).

And we are looking for further collaborators! If you are interested in helping out with this project, please reach out at firstgenphilosophers@proton.me.

Where is the idea coming from?

The page comes on the wave of a sister platform for German-speaking academia, introduced by Daniel James and Barbara Vetter, and share the same ethos:  philosophy can benefit not only from various perspectives, but also from an ongoing discussion about educational equity.

Check out our German counterpart!
