<image:caption>My mom is from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, and my dad is from El Paso, TX. Both come from working-class families. My mom only finished middle school. My dad finished high school and attended three semesters at El Paso Community College. He wanted to be a lawyer. I think he would have been a good one––we love to argue. He dropped out because he was accepted to the police academy, which was convenient for his plans, i.e., marrying my mom.</image:caption>

<image:title>Contributions - Local Knowledge - It is the book in the picture. It was full of grammar rules that I did not understand and words that I had to guess how to pronounce. It goes without saying that my educated guesses were a far cry from the actual pronunciation. Years later, when I moved to London, I had to retrain my made-up English phonetics entirely.</image:title>

<image:title>Contributions - First-Generation Philosopher - I was the first person in my immediate family to attend high school, let alone university. This was not due to any conspicuous merit on my part, but rather down to sheer luck.</image:title>

<image:title>Contributions - First-Generation Philosopher - My father (in the picture on the left) worked at a succession of jobs – steel worker, shopkeeper, factory worker, tram driver. My mother worked in a variety of factories, making clothes or shoes. I was always conscious growing up that both of my parents were tremendously hard workers who were making enormous sacrifices so that my brother and I could have the opportunities for a flourishing life that were denied to them. I felt I had to do all I could to honour their sacrifice.</image:title>
